Sto has been a leader in proprietary acoustic solutions for over 35 years. StoSilent is a range of acoustic management systems for ceiling, walls and non-contact surfaces. Each system uses sound-absorbing echo control materials to help create comfortable interior spaces, while providing design freedom with a variety of colours and textures.

For smaller projects where professional acoustic engineers are not involved, we may be able to give advice and provide architects and interior design professionals indicative anticipated improvement in the sound reverberation values, 'echo times,' as well as noise reduction for the common range of frequencies based on room use, adapted to the specific project.

Download the StoSilent planning manual (.pdf, 27MB) - an indepth summary of each system, finishes and technical details

*Please note: Specific products & systems may not be available or suitable for all locations due to local building regulations and standards. Contact your local Sto expert for advice on locally available products & systemshere.

Why is it important to control sound reverberation?

We spend approximately 95% of our time indoors - from our homes to our workplaces, from hospitals to entertainment venues. For this reason, the interior acoustics of our spaces is essential for our health and wellbeing, as well as for productivity. Acoustic management strategies can help to control sound reverberation or 'echo' and noise of interior spaces, contributing to improved living and working environments.

    Improved acoustics, improved wellbeing

Designing absorbent surfaces into a room can improve communication, reducing stress and improving the quality of life for the inhabitants. Furnishings such as curtains, carpets, sofas or even planting all have some effect on the acoustic comfort of a room. Acoustic ceiling and wall systems further enhance acoustics with minimal restrictions on appearance and architectural design. Sto's innovative, simple, functional and cost-effective acoustic solutions may be regarded as 'invisible architecture' for any areas where acoustic treatments are required, including in private homes.

  • Suspended acoustic system

    StoSilent Distance

StoSilent Distance is a versatile range of suspended ceiling and wall lining systems, ideal for seamless installation over large areas. Utilizing a proprietary and adjustable sub construction of metal profiles, these systems effectively bridge the cavity between the visible surface and the building structure allowing space for cables and pipes. Crafted from expanded glass granulate, the acoustic panels offer both lightweight construction and sound-absorbing properties, with αw values ranging from 0.45 to 0.80. Moreover, a variety of finishes in different textures and colors cater to diverse aesthetic preferences. Designed for optimal adaptability, these systems can be easily adjusted to create simple or unique shapes within a room.

    StoSilent Direct

This space-saving system is designed for easy assembly and hassle-free installation. Directly bonded to a suitably prepared and load-bearing building structure, this system eliminates the need for a sub-construction, saving time and effort. Crafted from lightweight sandwich boards made of stone wool, and featuring a factory-applied preparation coat compatible with a variety of Sto finishes, the system offers the benefits of suspended systems while conserving space. Ideal for areas where a cavity for the concealing of pipework and other services is not needed - an excellent space-saving solution.

    StoSilent Frame

Fast, cost-effective, minimal components and excellent results - this system features 95% recycled glass granulate panels bonded directly to the corners of a room, where sound reverberation is best absorbed. The range of colours available allow the system to be discrete, or add a distinctive character to the interior design.

  • Hanging acoustic panels

    StoSilent Modular

These hanging acoustic ceiling elements are ideal for spaces that require acoustic management without the possibility of directly mounted or suspended systems. In most cases the systems are supplied finished and may be retrofitted quickly into an existing environment, allowing the space to be partially used during application. StoSilent Modular provides sound-absorbing benefits and is available in a range of sizes, colours and shapes, allowing for design flexibility.

  • Acoustic plasters

    StoSilent Compact

Suspended or mounted acoustic systems are not always possible in a building project, especially refurbishments of heritage buildings, places of worship, or others with lower ceiling heights. In these scenarios, StoSilent Compact can be installed directly to the ceiling substrate with minimal depth required.

StoSilent surface finishes range from smooth to coarse textures depending on the acoustic build up chosen and desired acoustic impact. All may be through-tinted in a wide range of colours, offering design freedom and easier long term maintenance. The application method varies depending on the material chosen and includes hand-applied as well as sprayed surfaces. To achieve visual consistency and the acoustic properties desired, all systems should be applied by trained applicators.

Sto has an online and on-demand continuing development presentation (CPD) available to design professionals “how to achieve good acoustics” here.

The Sto presentation is intended to give an insight into why & where acoustics are needed as well as how the integration of seamless ceiling and wall linings may be considered to be “invisible architecture” for atria, conference, education, leisure and health care spaces.

The acoustic systems overview will allow you to understand how to specify acoustic treatment, how good acoustics can improve comfort, intelligibility and learning as well as understand acoustic absorption classifications and standards.

The CPD also features a range of global reference projects and a short case study of the Alvaro Siza building Angra do Heroismo, in Portugal.
