Sporthaus Schuster Munich's unique facade design with plaster and tiles

An optical illusion

For retailers in city centres, an engaging display space is an essential for their customer experience. Sports retailer Schuster expanded its Rindermarkt location in the heart of Munich by taking over the adjoining building, and subsequently renovating both sites together. The facade design does justice to the prominent city location: a checkered tile pattern that carries through in some areas into a render facade.

"The client and the architect had very high quality standards," explains construction manager Mustafa Yazar. The pattern of the ceramic tiles on the front of the building and the plinth on the back should continue into the rendered facade. It was important that the filigree pattern blended into the alignments between the windows without unsightly overlaps. For the customisation, the Yazars first created a sample plate and tested the machining of the pattern.

Facade cladding with render and tiles

The external wall insulation system StoTherm Mineral was installed, with subsequent reinforcing layers applied at varying levels of thickness to even out irregularities of the base wall. StoCera ceramic tiles were then bonded to the wall by Yazar GmbH.

For the rendered facade, StoNivell F was applied twice to the external wall insulation system on the facade, and then completely felted after drying. The tile pattern was then marked on the plaster with the stencil and machined into the surface.

Construction site logistics in Munich's city centre

A particular challenge was the construction site logistics in the city centre: "We have no parking facilities here and with a tight schedule, deliveries had to be made on time and often at short notice," says Managing Director Ibrahim Yazar. "We were able to fully rely on Sto's construction site logistics."
